Some people look for "similar timbre" as the original hardware synths. I personally look for the internally chaotic nature that I'm so used to from the days I had zillion analog synths. For my ears, almost all "analog modelling" synths fail to excite me in that department - arturia included (and I LOVE arturia pigments and many of their effects). That's where XILS excel. BTW, I couldn't care less how "similar" the tone is. It's the "internal motion" of the signal that does it to me. These days, whenever I need analog synth stuff I just use XILS (and I own almost everything that moves...)EDIT: Just to remove any doubts, I have absolutely zero affiliation with XILS and I bought all their synths paying full price.... XILS 3 LE – xils-lab

Full Description View Full DescriptionTwo synthesizers in unisonTaking inspiration from vintage hardware such as EMS' Synthi A, AKS and VCS-3 units, the XILS 4 blends two synthesizer ideas together in one futuristic approach to digital synthesis. Taking inspiration from the "crystal machine" combination of two linked AKS machines with hard sync between oscillators, where one was connected to the keyboard and the other connected to the synth, as well as an unreleased prototype of two VCS3's. Experiment with modular connectivityXILS 4 is the perfect blueprint for experimental modular synthesis, where any module can be connected to another to create unique and expressive sounds using only the simple modular matrix. This provides a platform for a tremendous number of inputs and outputs to expand on what is possible with traditional synthesis techniques. Build your patches in an intuitive and easy to read grid where each module is layed out with input and output connectivity to let your imagination run loose and push the boundaries of musical genres with unconventional patching. Sea of inspirationAt the core of XILS 4 is the expansive and musical modules that provide the sound generation for your signal, including six oscillators, grouped in three pairs with hard sync, one multi-mode low pass filter from 12-24dB per octave slopes, four world-class effects to add studio-ready polish and shine to your tracks, one trapezoidal looping envelope, one polyphonic ring modulator, one noise generator and two static outputs. With no shortage of modulation sources and modules, the XILS empowers you to

That I own. We may just be attracted by other nuances, and that's fair enough... BTW, I'm not looking for whether it *generally sounds* exactly like the analog synth I had in the past. I'm listening more for whether the oscillators and/or filters and/or envelopes behave "less stable" / "more chaotic", which makes the instrument more expressive for me - which may or may not be as important for others. I really have no idea. Either way, it doesn't sound like any Yamaha product I know of.. The pulse wave in Xils Syn’x 2 is much closer to hw Synthex than Cherry's, so it's not really true that Cherry's Elka is "far better".It's got a nicer GUI, that's all. I'm inclined to agree that XILS sounds top notch. It's a shame their stuff is so buggy and UI so uninspiring. I've just downloaded the demo for Chor'X, XILS 505, and XILS V+... I can't seem to make any parameter changes to 505 and V+, and the UI for Chor'X doesn't work sometimes. I LOVE the sound though. This thing is great, and has stopped me from a) trying to hunt down a vintage Kobol, b) bankrupting myself on a Black Corp version, and c) checking B's press releases on a daily basis.Love the xils emus.j, Here for the gear Joined: Jun 2009 Posts: 26 🎧 15 years Hi every one. Thanks for all your comments and kind words.About bugs or issues, feel free to contact us directly. Dive outside of your comfort zone and explore new ways to patch modules together to create distinctive and exciting tones like never before. The true-analog emulation of vintage oscillators provides you with an exacting replica of the spirit and character of classic hardware machines to add all the flavour in your tracks that you will find from your favourite records of yesteryear. No synthesizer is complete without the musical and flexible filters to change the landscape of your tones. The XILS 4 is no exception, with beautiful analog-modelled multi-mode filters that produce immaculate character and tone, even when pushed to the limits. With three settings at 12/18/24dB per octave, you can find the right tone for every sound source, whether you're looking to subtly filter out some harsh upper harmonics or wildly sculpt your sound to sub-blasting resonances. The 18 and 24dB low-pass slopes can self oscillate when driven to their limits, with all the non-linearities of analog circuitry implemented, boasting a characterful and unique flavour. With the benefit of digital technology, the filters have been created as zero-delay, ensuring a natural and responsive sweep. Polyphonic sequencingInspired by the EMS 256 sequencer, the XILS polyphonic sequencer is a powerful 3 layer/2 track module with a set of unique features to give you the maximum amount of flexibility to your signal. Continuing with the modular design and ethos, each lane of the XILS 4 sequencer can act as a modulation source where each modulation creates an accidental interaction that would be. It sounds simultaneously smoother and more alive to me, which are qualities I've noticed with Xils synths in general. They seem pretty proud of their zero delay filters, which they say don't alias so they don't need to oversample. I'm not 100% certain but I believe Softube does oversample, so among other things, the absence of Xils oversampling, and the quality of the filters themselves, probably have something to do with why I think it sounds better. I also think the features Xils added like the effects, third layer, and XY mixer, are extremely well thought out and give it much more range than the Softube. masterhiggins masterhiggins KVRAF 3290 posts since 31 Dec, 2004 from People's Republic of Minnesota XIls does have great-sounding synths and plugins. That "something" that is missing in Arturia's synth is probably what people call the "Arturia plastic fake" sound. I have absolutely no idea what it is or why it bothers me so much, especially in the CS-80 V. It's worse here than in any of the other emulations in my opinion. Maybe they just had a neutered too polite sounding hardware CS-80 that they emulated? Couldn't agree more. Except that I think the Jupiter is the most disappointing one once you get to know it. I have the collection and some of it I really like, especially the digital emulations. And I like some of their analog emulations, even if I don' tfind them

Same story for Xils Synthex emulation..Cherry Audio's is far better, to my ears.Xils attempt at an FM synth modeled after the Yamaha GS-2...huh? Or was it modeled after a Yamaha CP-35? I really have no idea. Either way, it doesn't sound like any Yamaha product I know of..

Continuing with the modular design and ethos, each lane of the XILS 4 sequencer can act as a modulation source where each modulation creates an accidental interaction that would be

RAMSES filters sound gorgeous. No brainer when on sale. Darilla Darilla KVRer 11 posts since 11 Jan, 2025 i do like sound that XILS manufactor, it pleases my inner ears.
