I played checkers vs a Robot | AI and Computer Vision In this video, I will build artificial intelligence to play checkers with computer vision and a robotic arm.The purpose of this project is to show you how to integrate computer vision into the real world and make it interact with a robotic arm. In this way, you can verify and evaluate, in perspective, the potential of computer vision in real applications.I will tell you how I built the project, what hardware and strategies were used, and also the errors and problems that occurred during its development.Hardware for computer vision checkersThe hardware I used for the development of the computer vision checkers project is quite basic: obviously the checkers game, a USB video camera, and a robotic arm for prototypes.USB cameraRobot ArmBy combining computer vision, artificial intelligence, and hardware, the computer vision checkers project can be created as in the diagram of the image below.Following the diagram, I have prepared everything as in the image below in a real scenario.Checkers and artificial intelligence softwareI looked for a checkers game that was written in python, with artificial intelligence, and without graphics in order to integrate it easily with my project. On GitHub, I found the code from Dimitrije Karanfilović, checkers.As you can see from the image, the operation is very simple, just enter the number of the column and row of the pawn position and then indicate the new position. Then the artificial intelligence will make its move in less than 5 seconds.Checkers computer vision partThe only goal of the computer vision is to identify the pieces on the board and their location, so I placed a camera over the board and processed the images in real-time. The first thing to do is to have a good overhead view of the game. I did it with a simple USB camera.I tried a couple of solutions to identify the checkers and their position.1. Computer vision checkers identify the pieces by colors [didn’t work]I tried to identify the pieces with color recognition but it wasn’t stable. By changing the light or the position the checker detection was missed quite often, so it wasn’t reliable at all. As you can see from the image below something was not properly identified. The color detection method works very well when on a light controlled environment (which I didn’t have in this specific case). Identify the pieces with AI [working method]As you can see from the

Some players claim this approach improves spatial reasoning and enables new pattern recognition.Set Time LimitsAnother tactic is to set time limits for games. Moving checkers against the clock forces your brain to build stronger connections, allowing you to perform better under pressure.Setting time limits may also have spillover effects on your life as a whole. Working through checkers games quickly could improve cognition speed elsewhere. For example, you could limit a checkers game to 5 minutes. If you don’t beat your opponent in less than that time, you lose, regardless of who still has pieces on the board. You could also reduce the time to make moves by a few seconds in each round. This approach trains your brain over time to think faster and more clearly.Manage Multiple SituationsManaging multiple situations is also how checkers sharpens your brain. Facing several threats at once forces you to think strategically about your next play. For example, sacrificing one area of the board could be better than losing ground in another, given the future moves you want to make.Managing multiple situations like this teaches you that checkers is a game of trade-offs. Sometimes, the board will reward you, but other times, you simply have to take losses and make the most of a bad situation.Strategies for Winning CheckersLearning advanced strategies is another brain-sharpening technique because it introduces you to effective systems and play styles. These provide you with a deeper understanding of the game and offer numerous “aha” moments.But what winning strategies are there?Control The CenterControlling the center is a top priority for most experienced checkers players. The idea is to take possession of the four central dark squares in the middle and control the position of other pieces.Controlling the center works because it gives you more options. Arranging checkers in a diamond shape reduces the risk of being taken from any angle, including by kings attacking from the rear. The challenge is maintaining the shape through several moves. Sometimes you can push through like a phalanx, while other times, checkers move to the sides.Don’t Play DefensivelyAnother pro tip is to avoid playing checkers defensively.
