3.0 or later driver. ODBC connectivity provides basic querying capability, but may not be as full-featured as a native connection in Toad. For a list of databases tested with the ODBC provider, see the Release Notes. This form of connectivity allows connections to databases such as Netezza, IBM iSeries, Ingres, and Vertica. Note: Distinct values are not available in Code Completion for ODBC connections. DSN Architecture (Bitness) Must Match ToadTo create a successful ODBC connection, the architecture (bitness) of the driver in the specified DSN must match the architecture (bitness) of Toad. For example, 64-bit Toad requires an applicable 64-bit driver and 32-bit Toad requires an applicable 32-bit driver. To create an ODBC connectionClick on the toolbar (ALT+F+N+O). First published on MSDN on Jun 30, 2010 This is one of the most common errors while creating linked server to Oracle database. Today I will discuss the reason for this error and possible resolutions. Full error message: OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "LINKED_ORA" returned message "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified". Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDAORA" for linked server "LINKED_ORA". First of all make sure you have reviewed the following Microsoft KB article that has a lot of good information on troubleshooting Oracle linked server issues. How to set up and troubleshoot a linked server to an Oracle database in SQL Server Also make sure you have installed Oracle Client on the SQL server. If the SQL server is 64 bit then we need to install 64 bit Oracle provider. You can also create linked server using Oracle ODBC driver together with Microsoft OLE DB provider for ODBC. Once again on a 64 bit SQL server you need to install the 64-Bit OLEDB Provider for ODBC (MSDASQL) and 64 bit Oracle ODBC drivers. However 64-Bit OLEDB Provider for ODBC (MSDASQL) is already there in Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008 and later OS. This particular error message is a very general error message and can happen for quite a number of reasons. For general understanding of the error, you can review oracle documentation like this In SQL Server Linked Server, it could indicateinstall oracle ODBC 64 bit driver - Oracle Forums

2025-03-24Wikipedia.Creating an ODBC Data SourceI'm going to assume that you have 1) MapInfo Pro installed and 2) a database system installed too. In my example, I will use PostgreSQL with PostGIS. The steps would be similar for another database system such as MS SQL Server.First, you need to download and install the specific PDBC driver for the database system. For PostgreSQL with PostGIS, you can find the drivers here: odbc.postgresql.org. For MS SQL Server, this is a good starting place: Download ODBC Driver for SQL Server. If you look in the latest Release Notes document, you can find a list of ODBC drivers that MapInfo Pro supports. These are drivers that have been tested with MapInfo Pro. We may also support newer/older versions but we can't be sure as we have tested these. As MapInfo Pro is a 64-bit application, you also need to ensure that you install a 64-bit driver. These are the supported drivers for MapInfo Pro v2021.1:Microsoft Access ODBC (64-bit)Microsoft SQL Server 2019Microsoft SQL Server 2017Microsoft SQL Server 2016Microsoft SQL Server 2012 QFE Native Client v11 (64-bit)PostgreSQL Unicode and ANSI ODBC driver 13.01 (64-bit)FDO toolkit 3.8 (used by SQLite and installed with MapInfo Pro)Oracle Instant Client 19.11 (64-bit)Microsoft ODBC Driver for SQL Server 17.8You may also have to reach out to your IT department to get the ODBC driver installed on your system.Once the ODBC Driver has been installed, it's time to create an ODBC Data Source. You can create this directly from within MapInfo Pro or from the
2025-04-07RequirementsIn order to avoid incorrect integration with MS SSMS, the working environment must meet the following conditions: The data source must be a configured system DSN. Refer to the Driver Configuration article to learn how to configure a System DSN The driver, studio, and SQL Server must be of the same bitness. For example, if you are using 64-bit SQL Server Management Studio on 64-bit Windows platform, then configure the 64-bit version of the driver using ODBC Administrator launched from %windir%\system32\odbcad32.exe. Otherwise, configure the driver using the 32-bit version of ODBC Administrator - launch it from %windir%\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe. ODBC Driver for Oracle and SQL Server must be installed on the same computer. .NET Framework 4.5 must be installed on the computer. You can use the Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio to connect your Oracle data to an SQL Server instance. Linked Server is a tool of MS SQL Server that allows to execute distributed queries to refer tables stored on non-SQL Server datbase in a single query. With linked servers, you can execute commands against different data sources such as Oracle and merge them with your SQL Server database. You can create a linked server with one of these methods: by using the options in the Object Explorer or by executing stored procedures. Below are major advantages of using SQL Server Linked Servers to connect to Oracle:The ability to connect other database instances on the same or remote server. The ability to run distributed queries on heterogeneous data sources across the organization. The ability to work with diverse data sources in the same way.How to configure a SQL Server Linked Server to connect to OracleYou can follow the steps to create a linked server for Oracle in SQL Server Management Studio by using Object Explorer:Start your Management Studio and choose your SQL Server instance. In the Object Explorer pane, expand the Server Objects, right-click on Linked Servers and then click on New Linked Server.Configure your linked server in the dialog box:Give a name for your server in the Linked server field.Under Server type, select Other data source .Choose Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers in the Provider drop-down list.In the Data source field, enter the name of your DSN, e.g. Devart ODBC Driver for Oracle . Alternatively, you can input the ODBC Driver connection string in the Provider field. The linked server will appear under the Linked Servers in the Object Explorer Pane.
