Disney’s New Animated Movie Continues A Controversial
Walt Disney Animation Studios has been delighting audiences since 1937, when Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was first released. Since then, they’ve taken us on journeys far and wide, from tales of lovestruck mermaids (1989’sThe Little Mermaid), to Greek mythology retellings (1997’s Hercules), to super-powered family drama (2021’s Encanto). In the words of Walt Disney himself, “Animation can explain whatever the mind of man can conceive.”-->Walt Disney Animation Studios has been delighting audiences since 1937, when Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was first released. To compare the reception of Disney movies throughout the decades, Rotten Tomatoes has compiled a list of each of the studio’s theatrically-released, fully-animated, feature-length films. The titles are ranked according to their score on the (admittedly controversial) Tomatometer. Movies are sorted into three categories: Certified Fresh, Fresh, and Rotten. For a movie to be considered Fresh, at least 60 percent of its reviews have to be positive. To be Certified Fresh, the Tomatometer has to be at least 75 percent, and the movie has to have at least five reviews from so-called top critics. These factors explain why some movies with 100 percent ratings—like The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)—rank below films that technically have a lower percentage of positive reviews.-->Movies are sorted into three categories: Certified Fresh, Fresh, and Rotten. Disney Sign in to your Collider account Has any studio more fully dominated one decade like Disney did in the 2010s? Not only did the Mouse House start mining its animated classics for live-action remakes that regularly cross $1 billion at the box office, but Walt Disney Animation Studios enjoyed a tremendous resurgence both critically and commercially, and Disney’s acquisitions of Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm expanded their marketplace domination even further. But even before the 2010s, Disney was churning out terrific films—largely thanks to the acquisition of Pixar. In truth, the films of the 21st century so far has largely been dominated by Disney in one way or another, and while that kind of domination isn’t always something worth blindly celebrating, the fact of the matter is Disney has produced some very, very good films over the last 20 years. So as we head into a new decade, we decided to look back and curate a list of the very best Disney movies of the 21st century so far. This includes Disney originals—both animated and live-action—as well as output from Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, and even a few underrated gems that we feel still haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve. So sit back and peruse our not-at-all controversial list in which we pinpointed the 30 best Disney movies of the century so far. An Important Note on Eligibility: For the purposes of keeping this list a “Disney” list, we excluded adult films that were produced by labels like Touchstone Pictures (sorry, Unbreakable) and co-productions through said labels (sorry, The Royal Tenenbaums). It’s also important to note that Disney did not start releasing Marvel movies until 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers, so films like Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avenger are technically Paramount Pictures movies and were thus ruled ineligible. Remember the Titans (2000) Great sports movies stand the test of time even if you couldn’t give an eff about sports. In my mind, there aren’t too many more memorable than the aptly named Remember the Titans. Mixing the warmth of a found-family tale with the sobering reality of early-70s race relations, the film is led by a typical powerhouse performance by Denzel Washington as T.C. Williams High School’s new football coach, Herman Boone. As Boone is attacked from every direction off the field simply for being a black man in 1971 Virginia, he’s able to batter together a team on the field where players of all races become a tight-knit crew. Featuring a charming-as-heck cast of young talent—including baby-faced Ryan Gosling, Donald Faison, Hayden Panettiere—Remember the Titans is a highly quotable, endlessly rewatchable gem that’ll put tears in your eyes for every reason possible. You could say it’s perfect, in every aspect of the game. — Vinnie Mancuso Monsters, Inc. (2001) Image via Pixar Monsters, Inc. was a vitally important film for Pixar. To the complaint. When the service launched in November 2019 before Chapek took over, Disney set an initial target of 60 million to 90 million subscribers by the end of 2024. But after Chapek assumed leadership, Disney+ experienced higher growth than originally anticipated, gaining over 50 million subscribers in its first five months and nearly 74 million subscribers in its first year. Against this backdrop, Chapek decided to “go all in” on the platform, announcing a major reorganization of the company’s media and entertainment operations. Distribution and commercialization activities were centralized into the Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution (DMED) arm, which essentially became responsible for the monetization of all content globally, the suit says. Investors say that the reorganization represented a “dramatic departure from Disney’s historical reporting structure and was hugely controversial within the Company because it took power away from creative content-focused executives and centralized it in a new reporting group” led by Daniel. Prior to this, Disney was organized into four reporting segments comprised of media networks, parks, studio entertainment and direct-to-consumer. “With this new structure, Chapek removed budgetary and distribution control from the heads of Disney’s content groups (much to their dismay) and placed control in the hands of DMED’s new Chairman, defendant Daniel, who reported directly to his long-time mentor Chapek,” states the complaint, which notes that the duo “exerted near complete control over the Company’s strategic decisions around content.” After Bob Iger, who was also named in the complaint, returned to lead the company, he made clear that an important component of restoring Disney’s success would be to return power back to creative executives, including distribution decisions. The suit points to the statement as evidence that Chapek’s comments on his reorganization were meant to mislead investors. Disney didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.. Mission:Controversy is all around us. In order to compete in the cinematic game, films must continue to push the boundaries of what people can comprehend. In some cases, films are considered controversial. The ideology behind a controversial film is that it is not commonly regarded as socially unacceptable; but in some cases it can be disputed over. The glory of the film world thrives on the disputes among movie viewers to keep people interested in the films. Some of the most famous and newest films are controversial, but when does this controversy push too far? Because of the new technological age in which we exist, does the controversy of film impact our lives too greatly? Does it have an effect on our every day life? Does it effect behaviors and how we treat others? And if so, is this all still considered good film making or at this point does it become detrimental to human health and society? Certain films that are allowed to be shown in the United States are banned in other countries for various reasons. It is believed that certain movies infringe on religious beliefs or are too blasphemous to be available to the public. With all of this considered, do you think that the ideas in movies and the controversy of film has an effect on the general public? From interviews with real high school students one can see how the younger generations view controversy and movies of today. With the passage of times interests, values and viewpoints change. Insight on what the younger generations think of controversial movies allows for people to create an accurate hypothesis as to what the rising adults will be like and what they will value. One may wonder, how does all of this depend on movies? It does not depend on movies alone. Movies are an ever-changing entity that can be used as a measurement of what society enjoys in terms of entertainment. Controversial films that are either loved or hated by the pubic are good to discuss to observe different patterns. If the majority of the younger generation accept a movie, and the majority of the older generation find it unacceptable, it shows the cultural split. From there, one can determine different factors as to why the movie was liked or disliked. If the younger audience enjoys the movie because they enjoy the humor and the older audience dislikes the movie because of the humor it allows one to see that the different audiences have different views as to what comedy is. This difference shows difference in interests, values and how the passage of time has affected the public..
