Here in Japan, the moon is particularly bright and beautiful during the autumn months, when people gather to celebrate autumn harvests and take part in Tsukimi (“Moon Viewing”) events.It’s not just the sky where the moon shines bright in autumn, though, as a number of fast food chains join in the festivities with their own moon-viewing collections. And one we look forward to gazing at every year is the lineup from McDonald’s, who go all out with burgers, fries, desserts and shakes all dedicated to the bright orb.â–¼ Say hello to this year’s “Tsukimi Family”.“Tsukimi” is the term used whenever an egg is added to a dish like soba, udon or curry, due to the fact that the colour and shape of the cracked egg (raw or fried) resembles a full moon.The highlight of the McDonald’s Tsukimi collection is always the burgers, which contain the moon in the form of a fried egg, and the main star of the show is the classic Tsukimi Burger, with and without cheese.â–¼ The Tsukimi Burger (340 yen [US$3.09])â–¼ The Cheese Tsukimi (370 yen)▼ For breakfast, there’s the Tsukimi Muffin, priced at 330 yen and only available until 10:30 a.m.While the above muffin and burgers have been gracing the menu for a number of years, this year, we get to welcome a new member of the family: the Noukou Torori Tsukimi (“Rich Melty Tsukimi“), priced at 420 yen.â–¼ Th Rich Melty Tsukimi appeared on the menu last year with scrambled egg, but this year it contains cheese sauce and fluffy buns made with cheese.Also part of the Tsukimi Family this year is fries with limited-edition Yuzu Shichimi (“Seven Spice”) Mayo seasoning, which costs an extra 30 yen with an order of fries. It’s become a tradition for the nation’s fast food chains to join in with the festivities as well, by offering a collection of limited-time tsukimi menu items that usually feature a fried egg to resemble the moon itself.Out of all the chains, McDonald’s and KFC are the most popular when it comes to moon-gazing menu items, so this year we decided to try all the burgers they have on offer. With seven burgers in total, plus a surprise contender from a local coffeehouse chain, this is a mammoth taste test, so sit back, relax and enjoy, as we inspect each burger and consume all the calories for you!First up, we have the tsukimi burgers from McDonald’s, the chain that first introduced the Tsukimi Burger to the masses back in 1991, ahead of the competition.This year, they’ve brought back their annual Tsukimi Burger (top left, below) and Cheese Tsukimi Burger (top right). Making its debut for the first time this year is an all-new Sukiyaki Tsukimi Burger (bottom), which is said to contain a meat and vegetable sauce that tastes like sukiyaki (beef hot pot).â–¼ The Tsukimi Burger costs 360 yen (US$2.51), while the cheese version costs 390 yen and the sukiyaki version costs 440 yen.Lifting the top bun off each burger reveals their similarities and their differences. The fast-food chain is adding fresh, never-frozen beef patties to 328 restaurants in North Texas, following tests at 75 restaurants in Oklahoma and 14 restaurants in the Dallas-Forth Worth area, Instinet analyst Mark Kalinowksi revealed Thursday. The fresh patties will be used in McDonald's Quarter Pounder burgers, which include the Quarter Pounder with cheese, the Double Quarter Pounder with cheese, the Quarter Pounder Deluxe, and the Bacon Clubhouse Burger. "This collection of McDonald's restaurants... appears to mark the largest expansion to date of McDonald's US test of never-frozen beef," Kalinowski wrote in a note to clients. "We view this latest expansion of never-frozen beef for quarter-pound beef patties as another signal as to the direction McDonald's US is likely to head — more test markets/restaurants are likely to introduce never-frozen beef in coming months." McDonald's rival Wendy's has long used its fresh beef as one of its main selling points. Switching to fresh beef represents a massive challenge for McDonald's, but one that could potentially pay off through an improved public image and better-tasting burgers. The company has long relied on an extensive network of suppliers who make, freeze, and ship beef patties to its more than 14,000 restaurants in the US. Expanding the test would require a massive shake-up to that supply chain. McDonald's Signature Crafted Burgers 10 (Hollis Johnson) Some franchisees have warned that at the restaurant level, it would introduce a whole range of new food-safety issues. "I have major concerns over food safety and our lack of ability to serve a large number of customers quickly," one franchisee wrote in response to a survey by Instinet analyst Mark Kalinowski in July. The potential for foodborne illnesses is higher when uncooked meat is kept at a temperature above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, according to the USDA. But other franchisees said the change could improve business. "Faster cook times, juicier product, seared product versus stewed meat," one franchisee wrote. Another said, "Many customers perceive unfrozen to be better for you. Perception is everything."
