Kept the default Liberation Serif font since it works just fine for me, but if you prefer Microsoft Office’s default font, Calibri, you can change that in the Options dialog we discussed earlier. LibreOffice also lets you take customization further by adjusting menus, toolbars, and other settings. Why should you make LibreOffice look like Microsoft Office? Microsoft's UI is simply better Switching to LibreOffice from Microsoft Office can feel like a big change, especially if you’ve spent years with Microsoft’s familiar interface. While LibreOffice has all the essential tools, its interface can feel cluttered and lacks the elegance of Microsoft’s apps. Customizing LibreOffice to look like Microsoft Office can make the transition easier. You won’t get an identical Microsoft Office look, but it’ll be close. It’s worth noting that LibreOffice’s interface can sometimes feel odd. For instance, switching from the toolbar interface to the Tabbed layout is easy through the User Interface submenu in the View menu. But once you’re in the Tabbed layout, switching back gets confusing—the User Interface option disappears from the View tab of the ribbon. Instead, you’ll find it hidden in a submenu under the hamburger icon in the upper-right corner. Explore more open-source productivity software LibreOffice is one of the best Microsoft Office alternatives out there. Its interface may not be very modern, but you can tweak it to look a bit more like Office. Then again, you might not even mind the UI too much, since this office suite gives you a solid set of apps for free and works well with Microsoft Office files. Abstract“Windows reimagined” has been a buzz phrase since Microsoft first announced Windows 8 late in 2011. Marketing aside, one needs to look no further than the software coming out of Redmond, WA, to realize the message between the words. Microsoft put together a monumental 2012 — just about every product division saw major software updates rolled out for industry-leading products. What began as a user interface (UI) design overhaul for smaller form factors has been renamed “Modern UI,” and it has spread its influence throughout the ecosystem of Microsoft products. At the pinnacle of this new wave of changes is Windows 8 — the flagship Microsoft product and, arguably, the world’s most popular operating system. The stakes are huge, the quality of work is premium, and the excitement is palpable. This is no longer just Windows reimagined — it is truly Microsoft reimagined! Windows 7 has a good number of new processes running in the background you might not recognize. Msseces.exe and msmpeng.exe are two of which even some of the most seasoned Windows veterans might be left questioning. So what the heck are they?Microsoft introduced these two processes with its recently implemented Microsoft Security Essentials security suite. Don’t worry they aren’t viruses! If you haven’t tried out Microsoft’s Security Essentials, then I suggest that you take a look! It’s a free security suite that was created by Microsoft to keep viruses, malware, and spyware off of your computer. We’ve covered it in multiple groovy articles, check them out! For now, however, let’s take a look at these two groovy processes.Msseces.exe is the process used to run the graphical user interface of (MSE) Microsoft Security Essentials. Without this process, you wouldn’t be able to adjust any of the settings in MSE, and you wouldn’t be able to see alerts from new malware threats. If you take a look at this process in Task Manager, you’ll see the relative description of what this process does. You can end this process, and MSE should still continue running, quietly. You won’t be able to see any pop-up alerts if Microsoft Security Essentials finds an issue. But there isn’t any reason to end this process in the first place. The memory footprint is rather small, and it’s an absolutely safe part of Microsoft’s free anti-virus software suite. What is MsMpEng.exeMsMpEng.exe may or may not always be visible as it sometimes runs as a hidden process. MsMpEng.exe is the core process of (MSE) Microsoft Security Essentials. This process is used by both Windows Defender and by MSE, so it is a shared process. It will always run in the background and usually doesn’t use up too much memory unless you are performing a system scan. After a careful examination using ProcessExplorer, (the app we talked about in the svchost.exe article) you can see that it originates from the file location C:Program FilesMicrosoft Security Essentials. If this process ever closes, then msseces.exe will alert you with a warning message asking you to restart it. You can ignore this message if you like and MsMpEng.exe will restart regardless after a short amount of time unless you have another anti-virus solution installed.Part of great computer security is knowing what is running on your system at all times. Ugly 2D turds. When passionate Windows users argued that they should have 3D emoji, Microsoft denied that it ever promised such a feature. Some people pointed out that the official Windows UK Twitter showed off 3D emoji just days before the 2D emoji launched--- but that was just an accident, explained Microsoft. We haven't heard of "fluid emoji" since that fateful day. So, here we are, stuck with Microsoft's terrible 2D abominations. It's fitting, in a way, because Microsoft has never delivered the emoji that its users deserve. Microsoft's Legacy Is Littered By Bad Emoji 🤷♂️🤷♀️ Emojipedia"" data-modal-id="single-image-modal" data-modal-container-id="single-image-modal-container" data-img-caption=""""> It's been a long journey. We've flipped through some of Microsoft's worst emoji, investigated the Windows 11 emojigate scandal, and cried over broken promises. But we still haven't answered the big question; why do emoji look like 💩 on Windows? Allow me to propose a simple answer. Microsoft has always sucked at designing emoji, and it will continue churning out bad emoji until the end of eternity. Back in 2015, Insider published an article titled "Why Microsoft Decided That Its Poop Emoji Shouldn't Smile." It's a fantastic piece of investigative journalism that reveals Microsoft's literal, inartistic interpretation of how emoji should work. And as Insider discovered, Microsoft cared so little for smiley faces that it knowingly ignored the gross similarities between its poop and soft serve emoji. Windows' emoji changelog from 2015 also reveals some disturbing information. While other companies chose yellow as a neutral emoji skin color, Microsoft went with ... gray. And although Microsoft genuinely tried to make its emoji look more Apple-like in 2015, the results are questionable. Clearly, Microsoft just doesn't know how to make good emoji. It would take a miracle, perhaps a 3D animated miracle, to remove the stain of these emoji from Microsoft's legacy. Let's just hope that miracle comes soon. I'd like to end things on a good note, so I'm going to give Microsoft a bit of praise. The company did a good job designing Skype's emoji. It's too bad that Microsoft ran Skype into the ground right before a global pandemic and the widespread adoption of Zoom, and all that.Microsoft launches Windows 8 this week – what to look out for
Don't forget to call. When you buy something from this article, IGN Nordic might get a part of the revenue. Posted Feb. 28, 2025, 3:28 p.m. Microsoft has confirmed plans to shut down Skype in May and replace it with a free version of Microsoft Teams.Confirmation comes at a time when the likes of WhatsApp, Zoom, FaceTime, and Messenger dominate communication via voice over IP (VoIP), consigning direct calls to cellphones from the likes of Skype to the history books. As reported by The Verge, current Skype users will be able to log into the Microsoft Teams app and have all their content (message history, contacts etc) available without the need to create another account. Meanwhile, Microsoft will phase out domestic or international call support.Skype users also have the option of exporting their Skype data, including photos and conversation history, and Microsoft has made a tool to help those who don’t want to move to Teams view their current Skype chat history. You have 60 days to decide, as Skype goes offline from May 5. Either way, Microsoft will honor existing Skype credits, but will no longer offer new customers access to paid Skype features that let you make or receive international and domestic calls. What’s truly lost with the Skype shutdown, then, is the ability to make calls to cellphones. Speaking to The Verge, Microsoft said that while telephony functionality was useful at the height of Skype’s popularity, it is now less so.“Part of the reason is we look at the usage and the trends, and this functionality was great at the time when voice over IP (VoIP) wasn’t available and mobile data plans were very expensive,” said Amit Fulay, vice president of product at Microsoft. “If we look at the future, that’s not a thing we want to be in.”Microsoft bought. Maybe a response to its main competitor, Google Suite. Microsoft 365 also boasted improved collaboration and device management tools. 2020 to 2021: Forms and Teams for Personal Use Probably due to their increased use during the pandemic, Microsoft decided to extend Teams and Forms—originally intended for business use—to personal users. By October 2023, Teams had 320 million monthly users. 2022: Microsoft Defender Is Introduced Previously, Windows Defender Security Center helped to keep your computer secure and included Microsoft Defender Antivirus to protect you from viruses and ransomware. Microsoft upgraded this to Microsoft Defender in 2022 by extending its focus on whole-household device security and streamlining the app to offer people tips on online security, real-time notifications, and a central location to investigate threats. 2023: Outlook Is Upgraded and Copilot Is Introduced Microsoft In 2023, the New Outlook for Windows was launched. This update had a more toned-down and minimalist layout, easier-to-use settings, improved cross-suite integration, and more options to manage your outgoing and incoming emails. This really was an attempt to establish email dominance for Microsoft, as this new-look Outlook also welcomed sign-ins with Gmail, Yahoo!, iCloud, and other third-party accounts. While Microsoft had previously offered in-program support through Office Assistant—and the much-loved Clippy, an anthropomorphized paperclip who was always on hand to help—the company really upped its AI game in 2023. Copilot was introduced to Microsoft Graph and the Microsoft 365 apps, letting you search for information within the Microsoft programs and helping you generate, edit, and share text, including emails and professional documents. What Does the Future Hold? With the shift from Office 365 to Microsoft 365, it would seem apparent that Microsoft is planning to make continuous amendments to its package for the foreseeable future, keeping its cloud-emphasis at the core of its strategy. At any given point, there are hundreds of updates in development or rolling out, so rather than expecting a big shift, it's likely that we can look forward to constant improvements to Microsoft 365's existing package. In today's AI-centric world, it is also be sensible to envision ongoing attention paid to Copilot and its capabilities.Comments
