In this 2009 Google forum, a Google Voice user asked, "Does my Google Voice number have a SIP number?" Many answers followed with, "no," and alternative solutions - mainly involving Gizmo5. Today, we were referred to a blog by Todd Vierling that indicate Google Voice numbers have a SIP URI."The good news is, you can now call Google Voice numbers directly from SIP using the pattern [email protected]. This is a major step forward," describes Rao in his blog, entitled So Google Voice: SIP is Actually Coming (...in some form).Based on this, I tried dialing my Google Voice number SIP URI, and it worked. This is a great find, but let's back up a minute. Vierling mentions his discovery is just after the Google announcement that they are discontinuing Gizmo5 service, covered in this Engadget blog. For some users, this poses a problem, which is well-described by Alok Saboo,on TrueVoipBuzz.com:"Up until recently, Google offered the ability to forward the Google Voice number to a Gizmo account, providing some way to extend the reach of GV. However, Google announced the termination of Gizmo5 service starting April 3, 2011. For many of us, using Gizmo5 to use Google Voice services on ATA or other soft phones, this is a huge blow," says Saboo. So at this moment, those who used Gizmo5 to register SIP devices and take advantage of Google Voice services are in a predicament; they are losing their SIP addresses and cannot register phones. While it appears SIP is in the near future for Google Voice, indicated by their GV number SIP URI's, this isn't of great help because users can't register a SIP device with these GV SIP addresses.Since this is our area of specialty, we're going to make a few recommendations. Stay tuned.Related LinksUPDATE (3/8): Google Voice SIP address no longer available: sip.voice.google.com now silentGizmo5 discontinued: thoughts on free SIP alternative and Google Voice. Google today announced a handful of usability enhancements to Voice on Android, iOS, and web. The updates primarily focus on improving the calling experience. Google Voice now tells users if a call was dropped due to poor internet connections or other “network problem.” You’re then presented with an option to cancel/end or redial (green button). If that continues to fail, you’ll be offered the “Switcher to carrier” option, with the other person still seeing your Voice number. Meanwhile, expanding a missed call in the “Calls” tab will note if your “device wasn’t set to receive incoming calls” with a quick link to enable in settings. The last calling-focused upgrade is to “Caller ID.” On iOS, a new setting allows people to see their Google Voice number instead of the caller’s number “when you get a call through a forwarding number.” When this setting is on, you will see the number you linked to Google Voice as the caller ID.Finally, Google Voice now allows you to delete multiple SMS messages at once. Google says this is a highly requested user capability:To use this feature, simply tap on the avatar on one or more SMS threads, and a trash bin will appear on the app bar above the messages allowing the message threads to be easily deleted. All these Google Voice features — except for the missed call reason, which is still in the process of rolling — are fully available today.More about Google Voice:Google Voice for iOS adds ‘Suggested Contacts’ widget, Shortcuts supportClassic Hangouts shutdown starts as Google Voice and Fi integrations stop workingGoogle Voice will soon no longer be able to forward text messages to other phone numbersGoogle Voice now supports contact cards in text messages Add 9to5Google to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. The stock SMS app is dead on Android. Long live SMS in Google Hangouts (free)! This chat app was born when Google Hangouts consumed Google Talk, and now it's gobbled up SMS and Google Voice as well. Hangouts has the potential to be the best messaging app on any platform, but it turns out merging four distinct messaging systems together can be a little, well, messy. It will take some effort on your part to make this powerful messenger work for you.Getting Started The new features of Hangouts require at least Android 4.0 and an update to the Hangouts app. If you want to get access to Google Voice, you also have to download the Hangouts Dialer. Irritatingly, this second app doesn't do anything on its own and just takes up space in your apps screen. Also, Hangouts never presented me with the option to sign up for Google Voice, only to incorporate it from an existing account. Signing up a new account appears to be handled separately.Friends, Messages, and Calls Once you agree to use Hangouts for SMS and Google Voice calls and messages, the app presents three bright-green columns, one each for your friends, your text-based messages, and a dialer pad to make calls. Any calls you place through the dialer, either to contacts or numbers you dial, are placed using your Google Voice number. Google Voice calls to any number within the U.S. are free, and international calls cost just pennies per minute. If you don't have Google Voice, no problem; Google Hangouts supports voice calls all on its own with the same restrictions as Google Voice. The only difference between a voice call through Hangouts or Google Voice is that Hangouts voice calls appear to come from "No Caller ID" on most phones. During my testing, one voice call through Hangouts (not handled by Google Voice) was received as several separate calls—one call for each ring of the phone. Odd.The people you contact the most appear at the top of the list in Hangouts, and the rest follow below. A search box makes finding someone a bit easier. If one of your contacts is currently active on a Google Service that shows Hangouts—such as Gmail or Google+—you see a green chat bubble next to his or her name. This layout feels much more familiar than the older version's SMS-like approach. It reminds me a lot of old-style instant messaging.Your messages appear in the center column—all your messages. Whether it's text sent through Hangouts, IMs from users on other chat services, SMS messages to your phone, or text messages sent to your Google Voice number, it appears here. If your contacts list is in good order, your messages are merged into threads by user. So, my stepmother can text me from her phone, then continue chatting over the chat function in Gmail, and I'll see it all in a single thread. Unfortunately, you can no longer swipe to archive message these threads, however. When it comes to answering myVoice problem - Google Voice Community
Describe the bugI leave a couple of twitch streams open in my browser, and after having the tab open for like a day or so, sometimes refreshing the page will cause the entire browser to hang. Sometimes this also happens with Google Voice, which I also keep in a pinned tab, though usually I have to keep it open for at least four days before refreshing will cause a hang.It happens with other pages too sometimes, but Twitch and Google Voice are the ones I can get it to happen most consistently with. Also now that I'm writing this, it has occurred to me that this bug report might look like a clever ploy to get a few extra viewers for my favorite streamer, but I promise this is not the case.To ReproduceSteps to reproduce the behavior:Go to (or anyone who streams on Twitch for a few hours most days)Leave the tab open for a few days, using the browser regularly otherwise.Try to refresh the Twitch page.Become frustrated as your entire web browser locks up for fifteen minutes.Expected behaviorThe page refreshes and the browser does not lock up.System (please complete the following information):OS: Arch Linux, kernels 5.7 and 5.12 with AUFS and Futex2 patchsets.
