The developers of the GNS3 bring the major changes in architecture of new Version 2.x. Hereby, the step by step installation of the fantastic major release. These are the requirements for the installation:GNS3 Version 2.xInternet ConnectionCisco IOS images (Router, Switch) as per requirements.Installation of GNS3 Version 2.x on Windows 10. Step 1:Download the GNS3 software from Double click on the software and then follow the below installation instructions. You can choose any option as per your requirement.Step 2:In the Setup Wizard we will configure our GNS3. The IOS images which you will run during the configuration of the topology. Here you have a choice where do you want to run your GNS3 and IOS images. If you will get such error message quit from the Setup Wizard and open the Preferences from the Edit tab of GNS3.Under the Binary images sub-tab of General Preferences browse or select the folder where you have kept your IOS images. Now, add the IOS images by clicking on New button in the IOS routers, subtab 'IOS routers' of Dynamips. You can receive warring message in case of invalid IOS images. You can click on OK and take the next steps or select the another appropriate IOS image. For connecting the devices with each other we need to choose the Network adapter at the specific slot, we can also make these changes later.By selecting the correct Idle-PC value, we can prevent the IOS to over use of the CPU processing, and it is really very effective.Apply the changes and run the There are 3 different methods how you can connect your real switches to your GNS3 routers: Using a breakout switch. Using cheap USB network adapters. Using Quad NIC PCI cards. This article is how you can build your own GNS3 server using Quad NICs, if you are looking for a serious and reliable CCIE lab this is the way to go. I built the breakout switch before which you can see in my other article but the Quad NIC solution seems to be far more stable. Before I continue, if you don’t like reading you can also watch my Youtube video which you can find at the bottom of this article! Equipment List: 1x Codegen 4U-500 19 inch Rack: I like this case because it’s cheap, sturdy and in 19 inch format. If you want you can put this case and the switches in a nice 19 inch rack. 1x Asus P8H67-V Motherboard: I bought this one because it has video onboard, 3 PCI slots and 1 PCI-express slot for my serial ports to connect the switches to. 1x 8GB DDR3 Corsair memory: In the future I want to run virtual machines on this server as well, just for GNS3 it’s overkill. 1x Intel I5 CPU: Same story…for GNS3 a bit too much but if you want to run virtual machines as well it’s nice. 1x Corsair Powersupply: Just because I need one, 500 watt should be sufficient. 3x D-Link DFE 580TX: These are awesome, 4 FastEthernet ports per PCI-card and not too expensive on Ebay. 1x 4-port serial PCI-express card: Very nice card which has 4 serial ports to connect my switches to ( you can also buy 4x USB 2 Serial instead). 2x Cisco 3560 Switch. 2x Cisco 3550 Switch. If you are on a low budget just get cheaper hardware. A core 2 duo can run 12 routers with no problem and you don’t need more than 4GB of memory. I wouldn’t recommend getting other Quad NICs than the D-Link DFE580TX since it’s working right out of the box and not too expensive. You can also use 4x 3550’s but keep in mind the QoS of the 3560 is different and there is no way to practice private vlans. Installing Ubuntu: Installation of Ubuntu was a piece of cake, the D-Link Quad NICs and the serial port PCI-express card are detected and work out of the box, I didn’t have to install any device drivers. If you install GNS3 from the Ubuntu repositories you’ll have GNS3 0.73 which is working fine for me, there are no features in GNS3 0.74 that I need for this CCIE lab. I don’t have a monitor or keyboard connected to this machine so I decided to configure VNC server which is installed by default in Ubuntu, just configure it and you are ready to go. Installing ser2net: Ser2net will make sure you can access your serial ports from the network by telnetting into them, this is what you need to do:Download GNS3-.1.source.zip (GNS3) - SourceForge
For some time now I have been asked how I simulate hosts in GNS3 and my stock answer was to configure a router as a host by issuing the "no ip routing" command and setting a default gateway with the "ip default-gateway" command. You would also need to assign an IP address to the interface connected to the router performing routing, or a switch which in turn is connected to a router doing the routing. It worked a treat but had one major flaw, namely, CPU overhead. I know that a lot of people tried putting loopback adapters at either end of a topology but when pinging between multiple loopback adapters the traffic stayed on the PC and would not pass through the routers configured in GNS3.By jove though, a clever man, mirnshi I believe his name is, has devised a great little program that can simluate up to 9 hosts within GNS3. It is called VPCS and can be downloaded from here.In my traditional style I shall run you through a step-by-step guide of configuring VPCS and show you an example of how I set up a basic topology to test the functionality.1. Download the zip file from here and extract it to wherever desired.2. Go to the GNS3/Dynamips directory and rename the cygwin1.dll file to cygwin1.dll.old and copy the cygwin1.dll file in the VPCS directory to this directory.3. Open up a command prompt and change the directory to where you have the VPCS folder. If you are unsure of how to do this, go to Start-->Run and type in "cmd" (without the quotes) and hit Enter. Now using Windows Explorer go to the folder where VPCS is located and copy the location from the address bar. If you cannot see the address bar go to View-->Toolbars and click Address Bar. Now go back to the command prompt you opened and type "cd" (again, without the quotes) followed by the path to your VPCS folder. For example, I may have cd C:\Program Files\GNS3\vpcs-0.14gAn even easier way to do this in Windows XP is to download the "Open Command PromptDownload GNS3-.1.source.zip.sha256 (GNS3) - SourceForge
In our last blog post, we covered how you can install a FortiGate firewall on a VMware workstation, and we were able to build a lab around it successfully. In this blog, we will take a look at how you can install the FortiGate firewall on GNS3. After the installation, we will build a small lab to test our environment in our next blog. Can the FortiGate firewall be installed on GNS3?Steps to install FortiGate firewall in GNS3.1. Download the FortiGate KVM image.2. Download the empty hard disk file.3. Install the FortiGate on the GNS3.4. Set the password for the fortigate.5. Get the interface and IP details. Can the FortiGate firewall be installed on GNS3?The gns3 is a network emulation software; There are hundreds of network devices that gns3 supports for you to build the lab. The FortiGate firewall is among them. You could install the FortiGate firewall in gns3 either by using the existing VMware virtual machine that we deployed in the previous lab or get the KVM image from the FortiGate website and install it directly on the gns3vm or GNS3 remote server. For better performance, it is highly recommended that you install the FortiGate firewall on a remote server instead of gns3vm. The problem with gns3vm is that it does nested virtualization, meaning virtualization on top of virtualization. This will degrade the performance of your firewall. If you are not concerned about the performance, you could proceed with the FortiGate VM installation on GNS3VM itself. We will go through that as well.I have covered how you can install GNS3 on a remote server here, and you may check out the article here to learn more. If you don’t have gns3 installed as a remote server and want to use the VMware option, you may check the article here to learn more about how you can integrate different types of virtual machines into the GNS3.1. Download the FortiGate KVM image. One of the great things about FortiGate is that, unlike other vendors, its software size is about 73MB, I am not sure how they add tons of features to a small software package. Moreover, you don’t need to have a service agreement to download the software image, which is really good.To download the FortiGate image,Goto the link here.Sign in to the page, and if you don’t have the account, you may sign up for one and go back to the link I mentioned. GNS3 (Graphical Network Simulator) is the most popular – open source, free software – tool for designing and simulating network infrastructure. GNS3 has 2 partsThe GNS3-all-in-one software (GUI) The GNS3 virtual machine (VM) This post is not meant for explaining GNS3; read GNS3 Documentation for more details. I just want to share the common mistake, which newbies do when setup GNS3. And the simple configuration to resolve the same. While setting up separate GNS3 VM, you need to enable KVM support for the GNS3 VM (even if you are using all in one). Because, most of the appliance need KVM support on GNS3 VM otherwise you won’t be able to import network appliance to GNS3. Ref: In my case, I am using GNS3 UI on a VM (Ubuntu with Graphics) and GNS3 VM on another VM; both are running on top of ESXi (ver 6.7.0). I have verified that Virtualization has been enabled for my ESXi physical host and tried to import an appliance.See, both remote server or GNS3 VM no supporting KVM. Still I proceeded with main server; I got error on GNS3 saying, “no KVM support”. So, I went to GNS3 VM console, yes NO KVM Support !Later I realized that, I missed to enable Virtualization for my GNS3 VM (on ESXi console) and proceeded with same.Verify the same on GNS3 VM console again.Great, now my GNS3 VM is supporting KVM I can proceed with importing appliance which need KVM support. If you are using VirtualBoxHappy news !!! VirtualBox 6.1 is supporting Nested Virtualization and you can use Local GNS3 VM in VirtualBox itself. You can enable Enable Nested VT-x/AMD-V via VirtualBox Manager GUI or using VirtualBox CLI vboxmanage command.vboxmanage modifyvm Ubuntu --nested-hw-virt on(Where Ubuntu is my vm name)Enable Nested Virtualization on VirtualBoxEnjoy GNS3 !
