A Windows installer with a collection of extensions for GIMP that provides the ability to choose GIMP plugins transform our favorite free image editor from a good program into a near-Photoshop equivalent. Plugins add new features, improve your workflow, and help you customize GIMP to your exact preference. Like all great things in life, however, installing GIMP plugins can be complicated. They can be hard to find, tricky to install, and you may run into compatibility issues. In this guide, we'll walk you through how to use GIMP plugins and which ones are worth your time. How to Find GIMP Plugins The GIMP plugin scene is a bit of a mess. Plugins used to be aggregated by the GIMP Plugin Registry, but that no longer exists. Now, you'll find them scattered all over the internet. Some GIMP extensions are very old and haven't been updated in a decade or more. There's no guarantee that the GIMP scripts that you find will play nicely with the version of GIMP that you use. Plugins that were popular in the past, like the GIMP DDS plugin or BIMP, are now abandoned and no longer work. How to Install GIMP Plugins There are two main ways to install GIMP plugins. First, the manual way. If your GIMP plugin is in a ZIP file, you'll need to copy the contents to GIMP's Plugins and Scripts folders. Make sure that the downloaded plugin has been unzipped before continuing. In GIMP, go to Edit > Preferences > Folders. Locate the Plugins and Scripts folders under this menu. There are two folders in each section. One is a system folder, and the other is a user folder. Select the latter, and click Show file location in the file manager to open it. It's the icon that looks like a little filing cabinet. If your downloaded GIMP extensions are in the PY format, move them into the Plugins folder. If they're in the SCM format, move them into the Scripts folder. Restart GIMP, and they should be ready to use. The second way is the automatic method. Some GIMP extensions come pre-packaged with their own installer. Double-click on the installer and follow the prompts as you would with any other application. Installers are platform-specific, so you might find plugins that are only available for Windows, but not Linux or Mac. It's also worth remembering that opening random installers off of the internet can be risky, so make sure that your antivirus software is up-to-date and running properly. Once you've installed your GIMP plugin, you should see it appear under the Filters menu or another one of the submenus nearby. It may be under Image or Layers, or you may get a whole new menu called Script-Fu. Sometimes, GIMP plugins may run as a separate app, triggered to launch whenever they're needed. Let's go over some of the best GIMP plugins you can download. 1. Darktable As you probably already know, GIMP is one of the best free photo editing apps available. A project internally nicknamed the “space invasion“, the end goal of which is to simplify and improve color management in GIMP, as well as other GEGL-based projects- About a year ago, babl, the library used by GIMP and GEGL to perform color conversions, gained the ability to tie arbitrary RGB color spaces to existing pixels formats. This, in turn, allowed GIMP to start using babl for performing conversions between certain classes of color profiles, instead of relying solely on the LCMS library, greatly improving performance. However, these conversions would only take place at the edges between the internal image representation used by GIMP, and the outside world; internally, the actual color profile of the image had limited effect, leading to inconsistent or incorrect results for certain image-processing operations- The current effort seeks to change that, by having all image data carry around the information regarding its color profile internally. When properly handled by GEGL and GIMP, this allows babl to perform the right conversions at the right time, letting all image-processing operations be applied in the correct color space- While the ongoing work toward this goal is already available in the mainline babl and GEGL versions, we are currently restricting it to the GIMP 2.99 development version (to become GIMP 3.0), but it will most likely make its way into a future GIMP 2.10.x releaseGIMP extensions:- Lastly Jehan, from ZeMarmot project, has been working on extensions in GIMP. An extension could be anything from plug-ins to splash images, patterns, brushes,

Previews. The GIMP Dashboard now displays the number of async operations running (in the "misc" group). The file view filter and file format list were merged in the GIMP File dialog. The GIMP 2.10.6 release announcement mentions that there is work in progress to add extensions support to GIMP:The idea is to include everything that can extend GIMP, from patterns, brushes and gradients, to plugins, and upload them to public repositories, so that anyone can easily search and install them with a click. This feature should land in GIMP in the current 2.10.x stable branch at some point. The work for this is done by the ZeMarmot project, which has a crowdfunding campaign for adding extension management in GIMP, as well as other improvements.Download GIMPOn Linux, GIMP is available as a flatpak on FlatHub (for how to add enable flatpak support and add the Flathub repository see this page). On the Snap Store, the newest GIMP version right now is 2.10.2 in the edge channel, with version 2.10.0 available in the stable channel.A third-party GIMP PPA is also available if you use Ubuntu or Linux Mint, but it has not been updated to GIMP 2.10.6 just yet (currently has GIMP 2.10.4 for Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10 only).

Whole screen, a single window, or a custom area before snapping an image. Linux also lets you use the PrtSc button, including Alt + PrtSc to capture a specific window and Shift + PrtSc to select a custom area. You can also add the Ctrl key to any shortcut and save the image to the clipboard. The program GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) allows you to take a screenshot from the same program where you edit the image after it's captured. Open GIMP and go to File > Acquire > Screen Shot. You'll get a few options, such as taking the entire screen, a window, or using a time delay. The captured image then opens in GIMP for editing.(Credit: Canonical )The Best Screen Capture Apps and Browser ExtensionsIf you don't want to rely on features built-in at the OS-level, there are also many third-party programs (and browser extensions) that can help you capture and share what's on your screen. Our Editors' Choice picks are Snagit and ScreenPal, which can do everything you can imagine, including take video of what's happening on your screen. (Credit: PCMag / TechSmith)
