"What's your Vent info?" is as ubiquitous as "What's your GearScore?" Voice chat programs are a fact of WoW life, and by all means Ventrilo dominates the market. After five years of using Ventrilo, I say it's time to change to something better. One of the most common questions I get from the show Big Crits is "what's the mod that shows who's talking in Vent?" It's actually not a mod, and in fact it's not even Ventrilo. Big Crits uses Mumble, a low latency VOIP program for gaming. It's mostly unknown in WoW, as Ventrilo clearly dominates voice chat in our world. Mumble is perhaps better known in FPS circles, where the low latency really gives it a competitive advantage. I started this article with every intention of making a pros-and-cons comparison between the two programs, but in truth, I had a hard time coming up with pros for Ventrilo. I'll run through features, but don't be surprised if you come out of this with a new perspective on voice chat options and a strong desire to switch to Mumble. Overlay is a native feature of both Mumble and Ventrilo; it allows you to see everyone who is in channel or just who is actively speaking. Both offer customization options allowing for moving the position, changing the font and the color, and showing only who is currently talking. Mumble allows slightly finer adjustment on positioning as well as changing the font size, but I would say that both are close here. Low latency As a raid leader, I'm acutely aware of voice chat latency. I even went so far as to set my Deadly Boss Mods bars to shift from small to large at 7 seconds simply because I wanted to take into account a split-second human lag plus a half to full second of Vent lag. "Meteor in five seconds" should mean "Meteor in five seconds," not "Meteor in three seconds by the time you hear this." Mumble was specifically created for low latency, and it lives up to its promise. There is just about as much lag as you'd have on a normal phone call or a mobile call with good reception. Low latency is the main reason I will never go back to Ventrilo and is my biggest annoyance when I am forced to go back to a Vent server. The latency is so low on Mumble that it allows for normal conversation, and "Meteor in five seconds" means "Meteor in five seconds."Auto normalization How many times have you been in Vent when someone new pops in -- or someone with a new microphone -- and they destroy your eardrums? What happens then? Either everyone forces

Platforms are not trained. These are not online therapy platforms and should not be substituted for professional support. Practice caution when using these services.Random chat alternatives without random video chatSometimes you may feel like talking through your struggles but not discussing details with your friends. Choosing from a chat alternative online allows you to chat with strangers in order to get things off your chest. These platforms are different from online therapy, and you're unlikely to receive advice from a licensed therapist. However, like online therapy, they can still offer a safe space for expressing and processing your emotions. When participating in a random chat, use discernment in what details you discuss with other online users.BlahTherapyBlahTherapy is a completely free basic chat service that can best be described as an alternative to Omegle, the random webcam chat site. Listeners on this platform don’t tend to have formal training but act instead as a friend who allows you to vent. For people who are concerned about trying online therapy but still want to discuss minor concerns, this site may be sufficient. For people who may be experiencing more serious challenges, one of the sites mentioned in the previous section may be more suitable. However, BlahTherapy does offer a $25 pay-as-you-go plan for individuals who prefer to speak to or search for licensed therapists rather than random people who have volunteered.MellowTalk Founded in 2017, MellowTalk is a website that was "built on the kindness of strangers." Like BlahTherapy, MellowTalk is a site that allows a listener and user to connect with each other as a cam chat alternative. This website also features a reward system for talkers and listeners. Talkers can give thanks and other rewards to listeners who help improve the community. They can also give the listeners feedback. MellowTalk is a free chat service, but it's not necessarily recommended for people who need the assistance of a mental health professional.HuddleUnlike many of the other options on this list, Huddle is a free iOS application that allows you to join groups, post videos about experiences, and chat with other users in your groups for peer support, with no strings attached. Some of the groups that you can join include:LGBTQIA groupsAnxiety groupsDepression groupsEating disorder groupsAddiction groupsGetty/AnnaStillsThe Comfort SpotThe Comfort Spot is a website designed by the creators of the Quiet Place Project, and it connects users going through similar real life situations. Although it's more of a community than a chat room, people can still chat about mental health topics. If you enjoy this website, you may also enjoy some of the other resources offered by the creators of the Quiet Place Project. However, since it's not an online therapy platform, you should still be cautious when using it to seek comfort.HopeNet 360HopeNet 360 is another online chat website that connects users with spiritual coaches to improve mental well-being. It also employs crisis counselors to speak to people over the phone. This website is available for everyone over the age of 13.
