Language and slang.Lexicons are dynamic. Language naturally evolves — new words join the lexicon, and old words fall out of favor. They’re a living and fluid repository of the words and phrases people use.But what does this mean for language learners? The lexicon is what you need to learn (plus the grammar structures, of course). You can’t learn a language without learning the lexicon. It’s a key part of your language-learning journey.Types of lexiconsThere are two types of lexicons: Mental and printed. Let’s imagine you have a huge database in your brain. That database is full of all the words you know, their meanings, and their pronunciations. This is your mental lexicon. Every time you learn a new word, it goes into your mental lexicon. Your mental lexicon is constantly adapting and expanding.Printed lexicons are the dictionaries and thesauruses you use to help you learn a language. These reference resources are vital for learning a language.Lexicon examplesEvery age group, profession, or even hobby has its own lexicon. Let’s take a look at some example lexicons and their words.Baseball’s lexiconHere are words that everyone who plays baseball uses when they’re playing baseball. Some of them are unique to baseball. Some of them are common words that have slightly different meanings in the context of baseball.Bases loaded - a runner is waiting on every baseBatter’s box - where the batter must standBunt - hitting the ball without swinging the batChange up - a slow pitch disguised as a fast pitchCurveball - a pitch that moves unexpectedly in the airFly ball - a hit ball that goes high up in the airLine drive - a ball hit hard that stays lowShortstop - the fielder standing between second and third basesStrike - when a batter swings at a pitch and missesWalk - when a. It shifts one channel up and the other channel down by the amount specified by the pitch knob and the maximum value is 20 cents. I have to say though that in my opinion this is one of the best micro-pitch shifters you can buy. Its effortless to use and even if you replicate the exact settings in another plugin it just doesn't sound as good so effortlessly. The rear of a kick drum, and you suddenly get much less sound! Likewise, if you seal the cavity behind the eardrum, you suddenly have problems hearing properly. This happens regularly; for example, when we're on an airplane or when we get a cold. In both cases, the eustachian tube gets clogged, and that prevents the tympanic membrane from moving as it should. The Inner Ear: Multi‑band Compression, Pitch Tracking & ADCBy now, the audio signal has reached the inner ear, and that means the cochlea. This snail‑shaped organ is filled with liquid. Logically enough, it must be waterproof, in order to prevent any fluid leaking. This explains the purpose of the round window, a small, elastic membrane on the surface of the cochlea. Its purpose is to allow movement of the fluid inside the cochlea. Liquids are incompressible, and without this membrane, the fluid enclosed inside the cochlea would completely block the ossicle movements. Indeed, stiffening of the oval window can lead to hearing losses of about 60dB.Inside the cochlean we find the tectorial membrane, which moves along with the pressure variations of the cochlear fluid. As shown in Figure 3, above, this membrane is in contact with the cilia on the top of the hair cells. There are two kinds of hair cells. The outer hair cells are the actual receptors. When the tectorial membrane moves, so does the hair on the the outer cells. This movement is then encoded into electrical digital signals and goes to the brain through the cochlear nerve. The inner cells have a different role: when the audio signal gets louder, they stick themselves to the tectorial membrane in order to limit its movements, playing the role of another dynamic compressor. Figure 3: Inside the cochlea. This tectorial membrane exhibits a clever design. Its stiffness is variable, and decreases gradually towards the center of the 'snail'. This is a way of tuning the membrane to different frequencies. In order to understand the phenomenon, consider guitar tuning. When you want pitch of a string to be higher, you stretch it so it gets more tense, and

Viscosity is a liquid’s property of resisting deformation, such as flow. At home, you probably know this property as the ‘thickness’ of a fluid. The word comes from the Latin word “viscum”, meaning ‘mistletoe’, the berries of which were used in ancient times to create glue. Water doesn’t behave like that — that’s viscosity.Image via Pixabay.Viscosity can be a weird concept to wrap your head around, because it makes fluids act not like fluids. Such a large part of our intuitive understanding of fluids relies on them behaving a certain way. Water, the quintessential liquid, flows immediately when poured; it takes the shape of its container, and if there’s no container, it spills everywhere. It gets absorbed by sponges or soil; it bubbles with gusto when boiling. On the other hand, pitch can easily be confused for a solid. Because it’s so highly viscous, it barely flows, has quite an easy time maintaining its rough shape, and barely percolates through either soil or sponges. So let’s see what this property which makes fluids un-fluid-like is.The source of viscosityIn strictly physical terms, viscosity is a fluid’s shear stress over its shear rate, and is expressed in poise (P), a measure of pressure per second. It shows how much force per unit of area you need to apply to make a fluid move (shear stress) and how the internal layers of that fluid will move in respect to one another (shear rate). In short, it shows how much energy you need to apply to make a fluid flow. The field of science that studies the flow patterns of matter is called rheology from the Greek term “rheo”, meaning ‘flow’.Viscosity is the product of internal friction between the fluid’s molecules. Both gases and liquids have viscosity, but the molecules in liquids are packed in more tightly — making them interact more and, thus, have higher viscosity than gases. Viscosity makes fluids flow more slowly, but also stick strongly to solids.Image via Pixabay.Shear rate is important in this equation because it describes how successive ‘layers’ of molecules in fluid interact with one another. A great way to see it in action is to try pouring honey out of a jar. It flows much more slowly than water because it is more viscous than it. But you’ll also notice that the honey in the center will flow out before the honey on the sides of the jar does as well.[jeg_zmescience_ad_auto size="__300x250" id="zmescience_300x250_InContent_3"] -->This is due to the friction between the layers we mentioned earlier. Honey molecules that are right next to the glass will be attracted to the molecules in glass strongly enough that they’re basically stationary (solids are dense bunches of immobile molecules). They will generate friction with other honey molecules, in turn.Friction always opposes the direction of motion so, in effect, this stops the fluid from sliding off the glass. Further layers of honey also experience friction, but against layers of fluid that are more mobile than the glass — so there’s less friction. Keep the

Rules-of-thumb and Good AdviceTooth pitch is measure as the distance from tooth tip to tooth tip. As a rule there should be 3-6 teeth in the cut.As a blade is resharpened, the tooth pitch is reduced. Therefore, retoothing can be necessary occasionally. The blade speed depends on the material to be cut. For the standard construction steel it should be about 50 rpm when using a 11″ blade.Feed is measured as the chip thickness per tooth per revolution (max. 0.1 mm – .004″) but is generally listed as inches per minute.Using the correct feed, the chips are bright, even in size and nicely rounded.Plenty of fluid must be used when cutting. Mixture 6-10%.Resharpened blades always have to be “run in”. Make 6-8 cuts with normal speed and about 25% of normal feed.If “pick up” occurs, the blade should always be dismantled and retoothed.Thorough cleaning of the blade and flanges before mounting is very important and the backlash in the device pins taken out. This can be done by putting slight pressure against the face of the tooth in a direction opposite to that of the saw rotation as the blade is being clamped. When purchasing new blades, it is important to be aware of the blade material, bore tolerance, possible surface treatment and side run out.Circular saw blades should always be resharpened on machines that secure an even tooth pitch. Resharpening with coolant improves the blade life.Tooth geometry must be adjusted to the work piece. For example when cutting stainless and aluminum, special ground blades for these materials should be used.Selecting # of TeethNumber of teeth can also be listed as tooth pitch, which is the distance from tooth tip to tooth tip and is measured in millimeters. The tooth pitch used depends on the size and the material to be cut.In the table below the tooth pitch in mm is listed and in the table on the next page the number of teeth is listed.Material to cut10-20mm20-40mm40-60mm60-90mm90-110mm110-130mm130-150mm150-170mmCast Iron4681114161618Soft steel/ Alloy steel68101214181818Profiles: Wall thickn. 1/10 dia.4681114161618Profiles: Wall thickn. 1/20 dia.3456681012Profiles: Wall thickn. 1/40 dia.23455666Solid stainless4681114161618Solid aluminum48121416182020Profiles aluminum4681010121212Plastics4681010121212Copper68111417182020Brass57101216181820Main rule: 3-6 teeth in the cut This rule is not used when cutting thin walled tubes, profiles, brass, copper and aluminum.
