I am the director of animal health and chief veterinarian for the North Carolina Zoo. And what that means is I oversee the animal health and welfare for basically 250 different species and about 1300 different animals here at the North Carolina Zoo.One, I'm really looking forward to hearing Temple Grandin speak at this conference, she's going to be one of the keynote speakers. I actually have heard Temple Grandin speak at a couple other conferences, I really liked some of the work she does.Also, the small and large animal conferences is where a lot of the new things are happening in veterinary medicine...I go to a lot of zoo conferences, obviously, and the new stuff is not happening there. The new the cutting edge stuff is happening in the small and large animal conferences. So, I'm always interested in going to the small animal conferences, because those are the places that I'm learning, hopefully, about some of the new things that are coming out and that people are trying in small animal medicine.

So, I know you mentioned the pen. Do you have a recommendation of even like tetracaine? Is there a particular numbing solution you like? Walk us through some of the diagnostics that we should do.Alex Sigmund, DVM, DACVO: Any red eye, in my opinion, should not only have a tonometry check, but also should have a stain, like a fluorescein stain, looking for ulcers as well as a Schirmer tear test because there are so many cases that get referred to me that could have been caught months earlier if one of those had been done, it just hadn't been done. The biggest pushback I get from that type of stuff is, you know, owners don't want to pay for all of that, and so my biggest advice for veterinarians is just to make an ophthalmology fee, like an ophthalmology exam fee, that encompasses all those diagnostics [so] that you can just go ahead and do them. One of the most trusted voices in holistic/naturopathic veterinary medicine, Dr. Susan Wynn, DVM, CVA, CVCH, AHG, says she does not use them.The Frustration of Urinary Tract Infections in DogsA number of cases will turn into refractory or resistant problems, meaning the UTI just keeps coming back and back.Take Flossie, for example, a 9-year-old, 50-pound female spayed dog.Flossie is healthy and athletic, but her human sees bloody urine and Flossie starts to strain to urinate every few months. Flossie “always gets better” on a 10–14 course of antibiotics. Flossie’s mom has some financial difficulties and doesn’t always bring back a urine sample once the antibiotics are finished and has declined culture and sensitivity testing, radiographs, etc.Although it’s possible that Flossie is simply prone to recurrent UTIs and may need 3 courses of antibiotics a year for the rest of her life, there may indeed be underlying reasons for Flossie’s UTI problem, and further testing is required to get the correct diagnosis.Although appropriate antibiotic therapy is helpful and makes Flossie feel better, they might stop working. DeCamp, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVSDr. DeCamp, a native of Flint, is a former professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Michigan State University and has joined Animal Surgical Center of Michigan.
