2025-04-0228 Aug 2014IntroThere are apps that will generate certain types of network visualizations of your Facebook data. However, this guide is aimed at those who would like to dig deeper into their own data and have more control into how it is visualized. Often visualizing and analyzing graphs and networks requires a certain amount of effort to familiarize yourself with the data to gain intuition on how the data is related.The fun part of this walk through is that you are already the expert on your own network of friends so seeing how things group will make this exercise intuitive. But what really makes it exciting is when the network illuminates relationships, connections, and groups in your friend network that you didn't know existed. Often you'll find you can talk to friends about new commoninterests or connections to other people you both know that you may not have known about previously.1. Install GephiIf you haven't installed Gephi already, you can do so by going here. It's free and runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux.2. Get Your Facebook DataTo download your Facebook data in a format that Gephi and read I'll be using this netvizz Facebook tool. Click on the "personal network" link then click "Start". You'll need to grant permission for the application to walk your Facebook friend network.After it is finished generating the network, right-click on the "gdf file" link and click "save as...".3. Load in GephiOpen Gephi then click on "Open Graph File..." and select the file you previously downloaded from netvizz.Make sure to keep the "Directed" check box selected. Gephi loads the network in a random placement by default so it will look something like this initially:4. LayoutA graph/network layout is the algorithm used to position nodes. There are many different kinds of layouts. For this walk through, we will be using the "Fruchterman Reingold" layout which is a kind of force-directed layout. Select the layout using the "Layout" tab on the left:After selecting the "Fruchterman Reingold" layout click "Run". This layout has no point where it will stop on its own.Just watch it run until the node placement settles down. You'll notice that your network of Facebook friends is alreadyclustering into several distinct groups. It might look something like this:You don't have to stick with this layout. Try experimenting with other layouts like "Force Atlas", or "Circular Layout". There are also more layout algorithms you can install as plugins by going to "Tools -> Plugins" and searching for "layout".5. Community DetectionAlready, you're probably noticing clusters or communities of nodes. The human brain intuitively sees these patterns. Add a node attribute "Label" for their name, as well one for their "Age". You can also add an edge attribute of choice (for example, a binary attribute indicating whether the two family members physically live together). When your data is complete, visualize the graph in the "Overview" tab; be sure to enable labels and choose meaningful colors for the nodes and edges based on either network properties or attributes.3.2 Importing dataThe node and edge lists of Gephi can also be filled by importing data from CSV files, or even (Excel) spreadsheets. For this, use the "Import spreadsheet" button, which invokes an import window.(Note that the same type of import window can be invoked when using the "File", "Open" menu button, and selecting a non-Gephi file that does have properties of a data file, i.e., is column-based.)Along the way, you are asked to select the right data format. Here, "Edges table" and "Nodes table" are the edge list and node list formats most commonly used, with Id being the identifier column in the node list, and two columns Source and Target in the edge list.The final screen asks whether the graph should be directed or undirected, and whether the data should be appended to the current workspace, or whether a new workspace should be made. The append-option can be used to merge multiple datasets based on the unique identifier Id of the nodes.Task 3.2: Download the small-gephiready.tsv edge list file, and load it into Gephi via the Data laboratory. This .tsv file has tab-separated columns. Go back to the Overview screen and create a visually appealing visualization.The rest of the tutorial will also use this dataset.3.3 Exporting dataSimilar to importing, both the node and edge lists can also be exported for reuse in another tool using the "Export table" button. You can then reuse or amend this data, for example in Excel, or in a python pandas dataframe.Part 4: A second real-world network visualizationNow that we know how to manipulate the data behind a visualization, it's time to explore more advanced network analysis and visualization options in Gephi.We turn back to the Overview tab, and assume that the small-gephiready.tsv file has been loaded as an undirected graph.
