I'm actually just about to get into this same stuff, with 4 mics on the choir (SATB) and two on the piano, as well as two "ambiance mics", set at an XY configuaation to pick up everything as a whole, as well as intentional crowd noise, like applause. And for noise, I usually just mute those mics in the mix during songs, and bring em back up. I also like to have a wireless mic on the director if he plans on speaking at all, as well as a mic ready for any announcements or podium work. As for mixing, I try to keep it as natural as possible. Minimal processing, EQ, a bit of compression, and maybe a bit of light verb on the ambiance mics. But the best sound is going to just trust your ears. Here's a some tips. Start with just the SATB mics in the mix. If you want a good stereo mix, then forget all band mixing techniques. There's no point to really put the bass down the middle like in a music mix. The bass is more of just another voice. So I usually mix it in the same standing position as they were on stage. Anything else may cause some phase problems. As for the choruses I record, these guys are the second best highschool chorus in the U.S., as well as the best in the southeast. So these mixes have to be good. But they almost never stand in a SATB format. That's considered "unprofessional". (I guess) So that makes mixing positions a bit easier for me. I try to approach the whole mix as natural as possible. Lives for gear Joined: May 2010 🎧 10 years Ravenscroft 275 phase issue fix I'm a big fan of the Ravenscroft 275 piano library. However, there are some phase issues--especially in the Close mics--that cause issues when blending mic perspectives.I've come up with a fix that helps greatly.Close mics: delay the left channel 0.4 ms (38 samples at 96k), then flip the phase of BOTH left and right sides;Side Mics: Bring the right channel FORWARD by 0.08 ms (8 samples at 96k);Room mics: flip the phase of both channels.Player mics: are okay.I use Waves InPhase to do this; but any delay plugin that allows you to do negative delays will work.The Close mics are the greatest offender, although they are my favorite of the mic choices. You will find that they combine much better with the Player and Side perspectives now. (I don't much use the Room mics). Of course, it's a piano, so the correlation will swing widely. But now, it will swing almost entirely positive.I am still working on the Player and Side mics individually; however, they seem to combine pretty well already, and the minor tweaks above seem to be good.Hope you find it useful. Gear Addict Joined: May 2009 Posts: 312 🎧 15 years I mainly use the close mics and the Player/Side mics. On the ear, the latter combo is nicer to listen to for long periods of time (as a listener). But when playing i only use the Close mics because i like to "feel" those titanium strings resonate.
