Despite being barely a decade old, it amassed hundreds of millions of users and became the go-to video meeting tool for individuals and businesses. “Zoom” is in fact now a verb for video calling. The main reason for Zoom’s user base explosion was its reliability. It works just well without the bugs, glitches, and errors that people are accustomed to when making audio or video calls. It has low latency and one of the highest frame rates we have seen in a video calling tool. You can host high-quality video meetings on Zoom from any device with a functioning camera. You can do that from your web browser or download the app on your smartphone or desktop. Free users can host meetings with up to 100 participants, one of the highest you can get without paying a dime. But, note that the maximum time for a meeting is 40 minutes on the free plan. The paid plans let you host meetings for hundreds of participants and for up to 30 hours in a single session, which most people don’t reach anyways. The free plan for Zoom also gives you access to a virtual whiteboard where you can write and daw to brainstorm ideas with meeting participants; it’s no different that the physical whiteboard you may have at your office. The free plan also gives you access to a chat tool that lets meeting participants send messages instantly to each other.Free users can use Zoom Mail, which allows them to access a third-party email account (Microsoft 365 or Gmail) inside the Zoom interface. Zoom Pro and the other things you probably use Zoom for. What that means is that you are going to be able to switch back and forth between video calls and phone calls pretty easily. Having everything under one system is pretty useful, and, especially for the technologically illiterate amongst us, pretty helpful too. However, there’s a catch. Getting Zoom Phone doesn’t mean you have Zoom Pro — they’re two different services. So if you have a Zoom Pro subscription to lift the 40-min group call limit, Zoom Phone isn’t covered with that subscription. You can circumvent this by going with Zoom Free, but if you are a small business owner, it looks unprofessional to interrupt meetings every 40min because you don’t have a Zoom subscription. Pro of course solves this problem, but you have to pay for it, alongside having to pay for Zoom Phone. Something to keep in mind. – Privacy IssuesThe biggest knock against Zoom Phone—and truly, the biggest knock against the company as a whole—has been their security issues. Now, this is not entirely their fault- before the pandemic, they were a little known video telephony company; within a couple of months they practically became the global default video telephony service. In all of 2019, their video service added just shy of 2 million users; by late February 2020, they had *already* added over 2 million. In December 2020, the US government put out an arrest warrant for a higher-up Zoom official for more or less being a ChineseFree Video Conference Calls - Zoom

Any factor, really), then you're best sticking with the options listed above. However, if your concern lies not with matters of privacy, but is instead, say, a reaction to Facebook's disastrous effect on civil rights, these are some options you might want to consider. 3. Google Duo Sure. Credit: BRITTANY HERBERT / MASHABLE Google may not be the most privacy-friendly company, but it does make products that work. Google Duo is one such app, available on both iOS and Android, that lets you make video calls with multiple participants. SEE ALSO: Why you shouldn't use Facebook's Messenger Rooms: A non-exhaustive listLike Signal video calls, Duo calls are end-to-end encrypted by default, which means the content of the calls is protected from prying eyes and ears. Unlike Signal, however, the app likely collects a ton of metadata on its users. The Mozilla Foundation, a nonprofit working to keep the internet "open and accessible to all," notes in its Privacy Not Included guide that "Google collects information on users that includes name, birthday, gender, phone number, email, location, contacts you add, and apps you use."In the end, you might as well use Signal. However, Duo is still a better option than Facebook. 4. Zoom I guess. Credit: Jakub Porzycki / getty Yes, Zoom. Sure, the video-call app has its share of problems. However, the company behind the app promises it's working to solve them. Available on desktop and both iOS and Android, the conferencing app skyrocketed to popularity as the coronavirus pandemic forced people to stay inside for months on end. While the app initially presented serious privacy concerns, Zoom has taken real and serious steps to address them. Specifically, Zoom will offer all users end-to-end encryption. However, like with Facebook Messenger, the feature is not enabled by default. Also, while there is free version of the app, to get the full benefits you have to pay up — $14.99 a month for the "pro" version. However, at least with Zoom the exchange is clear: You give the company money, and it gives you a service.SEE ALSO: How to use Jitsi Meet, an open source Zoom alternativeWith Facebook, it's not always obvious what the company is taking from you in exchange for the joy of being continuously bathed in COVID-19 misinformation.
