(Image credit: Qobuz)French music streaming platform Qobuz is continuing its quest to attract hi-res music lovers everywhere with the introduction of Direct Stream Digital (DSD) and Digital eXtreme Definition (DXD) file formats to its hi-res download store. Qobuz is making a big push in the mainstream streaming market this year, earning a fresh five-star review from us thanks to its strong hi-res catalogue of tunes, before turning its gaze on younger listeners with the launch of its heavily discounted student tier earlier this month. That push has continued via the launch of DSD and DXD formats to the platform's download store. Listeners can now access more than 22,500 tracks available in either format. Some big names have already been added, with records including John Coltrane's Blue Train, Michael Jackson's Thriller, The Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed and The Beach Boys USA ready to enjoy in DSD and/or DXD files.DSD is essentially a hi-res audio format (at a sampling rate broadly the same as 24-bit/88.2kHz PCM) that initially acted as a different, more efficient way of storing and archiving music data than traditional formats using single-bit information. DSD is also often claimed to be around 120dB in the audible frequency range – for context, CD measures around 96dB and 24-bit/192kHz recordings have a theoretical maximum of roughly 144dB, so the audible frequency range is usually higher. You may likeWhat is DSD audio? (Image credit: What Hi-Fi?)DXD, meanwhile, is simply PMC at a sampling rate of 24-bit/352.8kHz or 32-bit/252.8kHz. From what we can tell, Qobuz has put far more of its new files into the DSD format than it has into DXD, though.Qobuz isn't the only place you can seek out DSD files to download. HD Tracks still has a collection of tunes in DSD and double DSD, as does 7digital and Native DSD, though prices vary from track to track and platform to platform.Qobuz has transformed into an impressive streaming platform, and while we were a little lukewarm about it a few years ago, major updates to its features list, user interface and hi-res catalogue have transformed it into a major contender for audiophiles who enjoy streaming in their hi-fi system.MORE:The latest hi-fi, home cinema and tech news, reviews, buying advice and deals, direct to To use manual settings. Deselect LPCM 2ch 88.2 and 176.4, leave only 44.1. Under "Music Settings" set Audio CD Output Frequency to "44.1/88.2/176.4 kHz". Is PS3 compatible with HDCD? Yes, PS3 plays HDCD discs but it will not decode the HDCD signal. It can play a HDCD as a regular CD and feed the HDCD signal to an AV receiver to decode. Make sure you’re using the 44.1 kHz output setting because sample rate conversion will garble the HDCD signal. I’ve heard the PS3 (as of firmware 1.60) plays DSD discs. What are these? What’s the difference with SA-CDs? While SA-CDs can not be recorded and are by definition ‘pre-recorded’ i.e. pressed, DSD Discs are self-created discs. You can record them yourself from an analog source (or probably a non-copy-protected digital source) on DVD+/-R blanks using proper equipment such as a PC from Sony’s VAIO Type R Master series using software such as SonicStage Mastering Studio. To learn how to make your own DSD Discs check our guide. xAlternatively, you can download individual DSD files or a complete DSD Disc image. You can play DSD Discs on any PlayStation3 including non-SACD-compatible models, and also on a PC using Sony’s DSD Direct Player. Note: PS3 will work just with the stereo-only 'consumer' DSD format called DSF - not with the professional DFF flavor that can handle 5.1 channels and is used for creating actual SA-CDs. PS3 also does not accept DSD128 or DXD. Is DSD-CD the same as DSD Disc? No,DSD Upper - Digital Smile Design
Multichannel DTS for you and feed it to the optical digital output. If you disable DTS out it will output PCM stereo, also during multichannel SA-CD playback. The output frequency is 48kHz. In version 2.01 however, DSD-to-DTS transcoding is disabled again. Optical output from SA-CD remains supported but in 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo PCM only. Will the DSD-to-DTS conversion return? That’s unlikely, since the function requires payment of a royalty or license fee to DTS. It is conceivable that Sony make it available as a piece of software that you purchase through the PlayStation Store. The price would cover the royalty. We have suggested to Sony to do so but thus far they haven’t followed it. Why not perform DSD-to-Dolby Digital conversion instead? After all, PS3 already has an official Dolby Digital Live encoder That’s probably because there’s a second reason, one that applies to Dolby Digital as well as DTS: The SACD license does not allow a player to output higher quality than 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo PCM from optical (or coaxial) digital output. It’s not likely anyone would object against Sony implementing DSD-to-DD transcoding but (for now at least) they’ve chosen to adhere to their own rule. Can PS3 simultaneously output stereo via analog out and multichannel via digital out? No (unlike PS2, reportedly). You are forced to choose between stereo and multichannel. Can PS3 output DSD audio? Streaming of the pure DSD signal would be very preferable over conversion to PCM but unfortunately (at this moment) PS3DSD Digital Smile Design - LinkedIn
