In 1990 Casey Jones, a leading New York club DJ throughout the 1980s, and remixer of many Hi-NRG tracks for the Disconet Program Service in the 80s, put together a list of 200 top Hi-NRG tracks spanning the whole decade, from 1980 to 1989. His top 200 (actually a total of 246 songs) was later published on hotdiscomix.de. Casey’s list is as good a place as any to start a discovery into 80s Hi-NRG. The songs are not ranked in any particular order, being listed purely alphabetically by song title. The major artists associated with Hi-NRG appear in this list, and their names will keep cropping up in subsequent posts – Sylvester, Bobby “O”, Lime, The Flirts, Hazell Dean, Dead Or Alive, to name but a few.Hi-NRG Top 200 Of The 1980sDance Music Report January 1990. Still, it wasn’t long before the subculture spread from clubs in New York and Philadelphia to the rest of the U.S. by the mid-1970s. In 1977, the release of “Saturday Night Fever” further cemented the genre as one of the most popular in the nation. The upbeat, sensual sounds of disco—made famous by artists like Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, Kool & the Gang, and Gloria Gaynor—were characterized by strong beats, steady rhythms, synthesizers, and electronic drums, laying the groundwork for dance music to follow. (Billboard’s Dance Club Songs, which ceased publication in 2020, was originally the National Disco chart in 1976.)Disco saw a decline in the early 1980s, most notably due to Disco Demolition Night, an anti-disco promotional event at a White Sox game in Chicago in 1979 that ended in a riot. But the genre didn’t stay dormant. With easy-to-remember lyrics, party themes, and catchy melodies, disco songs have withstood the test of time, emerging once again as heavily featured elements of pop, electronic, and hip-hop music throughout the ’90s and into the 21st century. To look at the lasting influence of disco, our friends at Stacker compiled the 25 most-sampled disco songs, according to WhoSampled, which verifies submissions of sampled tracks from 31,000 contributors. A dance-centric evolution of soul, funk and R&B music, disco became hugely popular in the 1970s thanks to its danceable beats, energetic, often syncopated bass lines, and expressive, uplifting musical elements. While disco’s popularity declined in the mainstream during the late 1970s and 1980s, the spirit of disco lives on in music styles such as house and hip-hop, which would often sample or be stylistically influenced by the genre. It’s not just about a catchy hook or a strong beat. Photo: ABC Television, Public domain, via Wikimedia CommonsOur Top 10 Top 10 Bee Gees Songs Of 1970s (1974 -1984) picks up where our last Bee Gees article focusing on the music of the 1960s and early 1970s left off. The sound of the Bee Gees began to change dramatically in 1974 with the release of their album Mr. Natural which saw the arrival of producer Arif Mardin on board. However, the band’s sound had not yet completely changed but was showing signs of evolving from the heavy emotional ballads of their early 70s material to a more r&b sound on the Mr.Natural album. At the time the band began listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder who was huge at the time. The band’s 1975 album Main Course would mark a very dramatic change in sound in the Bee Gees and also the beginning of a spectacular commercial run that had not really been seen before in pop music.Disco music had actually been around in the NYC underground clubs since the late 1960s. However with the success of The Hues Corporation’s “Don’t Rock The Boat,” in 1974 and Van McCoy’s massive hit single “The Hustle,” that spurned on a new dance craze, disco was ready for mass consumption. The Bee Gees album Main Course is not a disco record, it’s a melodic funk pop r&b record. Yet it was an album that had huge commercials success with a couple of massive hit singles and really serves as the transition of the Bee Gees from a pop rock bands to a band that would become the ultimate symbol of the Disco Movement with the songs they composed and recorded for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack. This Bee Gees songs list will only focus on the songs the Bee Gees released between 1975Comments
